Divorce separates Rigel from her dad and beloved home in Alaska’s remote interior, where she was raised off the grid in a two-room cabin without electricity or indoor plumbing and educated by mail. Now living with her sisters and mother at her grandmother’s house in Connecticut, Rigel tries to fit in at a new school and a life full of modern amenities that don’t feel like home, she clings to her father’s promise: If she sticks it out for a year, she can return home.
