Ethics in STEM Workshop for Teens

Saturday, November 1412:00—1:30 PMOnlineGoodnow Library21 Concord Rd, Sudbury, MA, 01776

This summer a group of Olin students have dedicated time to researching ways in which Olin could become more involved in the K-12 STEM outreach space. One of the actionable efforts we came up with for this semester was a remote engineering/STEM ethics workshop targeted at late middle school/early high school students. This workshop will allow the students to think about applications of technology both in school and in professional environments - critical to the modern engineer's design/build process and interpersonal development.

Date and Time: November 14th, 12:00 - 1:30 pm EST

The event will likely not take a full 1.5 hours, but we have allotted extra time to compensate for any technical challenges anyone may encounter. We will send a zoom link closer to the event for registered participants.

Activities
:

This event is modeled off an engineering ethics session, developed by Olin student Mark Goldwater in 2018, that Olin College students participate in during the Olin First Year Introduction Course. The scenarios have been modified to be within the frame of reference of younger participants . Students will be placed in breakout rooms consisting of 4 students, where they will discuss 2-3 ethical scenarios. For each scenario, a facilitator will read the situation and lead a coordinated discussion for the students. The discussions will be student centered, and they will be the ones primarily engaging with the content. The facilitators’ main roles will be to assist in guiding conversations or providing prompts if students get stuck.
