While the Bookies had some reservations about the last book we read, The Buried Giant, by Kazuo Ishiguro, it certainly instigated a rousing discussion. With all bets placed, we buried the giant and rose above the novel's plot!

We'll meet next on Tuesday, October 31, at 7 pm.

We chose The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, by Carson McCullers, as our next selection.

Published in 1940, McCullers, only 23 years old, created an enduring novel. Told from the point of view of Mick Kelly, a teenage girl in Georgia, she tells a coming-of-age tale with a deaf-mute border, John Singer. Singer helps reveal to the young girl a depth of life's experience we may also vividly share through the novel.

As a second choice, the group selected How Rembrandt Reveals Your Beautiful, Imperfect Self, by Roger Housden, published in 2005. The author, also a poet, conveys how the art and life of the famed artist, Rembrandt, may provide vital awareness into our own humanity. Inspired especially by the artist's self-portraits, Housden explores Rembrandt's many-sided identities throughout his both joyous and trying lifetime.

However, since there are only four copies of the book in the Minuteman Network, it will serve as a backup selection. Anyone who wants to read it feel free to see if one is available at the Circulation Desk. If you get a chance to read this relatively short and wonderful book, please do. And if you finish it early just return it for another member to read.

Feel free to pick up copies at the Circulation Desk.
